From Cusco to Lake Titicaca

Puno lies 390 kilometres south of Cusco, at 3,827 metres, on the shore of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, which Peru shares with Bolivia. Between the two cities runs a road across the altiplano which, done with stops, is one of the best journeys in southern Peru: the church of Andahuaylillas, the Temple of Wiracocha at Raqchi, the La Raya pass at 4,335 metres and the Pukara museum. That is the Route of the Sun, which we turn into a private one-day tour with guide and arrival at your hotel in Puno. We describe it stop by stop in the Route of the Sun guide.

How to get from Cusco to Puno

Option Time Who it suits

What to see in Puno and on the lake

  • The Uros islands, floating, built from totora reeds, half an hour by boat from the port.
  • Taquile, with its weavers, about three hours by boat, and Amantaní, where you stay with local families.
  • Sillustani, the Colla burial towers above Lake Umayo, 35 kilometres from the city.
  • The Candelaria festival, in February, with thousands of dancers, Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many days, and the altitude

Two nights in Puno are enough to see the Uros, Taquile and the city calmly; three if you want to stay overnight on Amantaní. Puno is about 400 metres higher than Cusco: after a few days of acclimatisation you will not notice it; if it is your first stop, read the acclimatisation guide first.

How to fit it into your trip

The Route of the Sun works both ways: as a transfer from Cusco to Puno after Machu Picchu, or from Puno to Cusco if you arrive from Bolivia or Arequipa. Being private, the order of stops and the departure time adapt to your train or flight. The price depends on the group size and the vehicle, and we confirm it by quote.
