It lies about four hours from Cusco, above Langui Layo lake, and receives a tiny fraction of Vinicunca’s visitors. It is a long, fourteen-hour tour for anyone who wants a landscape almost nobody has photographed.
Departure from Cusco at three in the morning along the southern highway, with breakfast in a village on the way. From the end of the track, the hike climbs for an hour and a half to two hours along community paths to the viewpoint at about 4,700 metres, from where you see the coloured ridges with the lake behind. For travellers who have already done Vinicunca or prefer to avoid the crowds, reasonably fit and with at least three days in Cusco. Andina, the Peruvian state news agency, reported that National Geographic Travel included Pallay Punchu, together with Vinicunca, among the six most spectacular rainbow mountains in the world.
From May to September, with clear skies and sharp colours; early mornings drop below freezing. From December to March it can snow and the snow covers part of the stripes.
The community fee is paid in cash at the access point and is not included. Bring warm layers, gloves and a hat, high-factor sunscreen, two litres of water and poles if you use them; they are included. Trekking shoes with good grip.
