A full day following Cusco’s specialty coffee from plant to cup. From the city we cross the Abra Málaga pass, at 4,315 metres, and descend into the cloud forest of Huayopata, in the province of La Convención, at around 1,500 metres. There a coffee-growing family shows you their farm and the whole process, you take part in a guided tasting and buy freshly roasted coffee directly from the people who grow it. It is a private experience, just for your group.
What the day looks like
We pick you up at your hotel between 5:00 and 5:30. The road climbs to Abra Málaga, with stops at viewpoints over the snow peaks, and descends towards the high jungle: in a few hours you go from Andean cold to tropical heat, between about 5 and 28 degrees. At the farm you walk the plantation with the growers and see every step: varieties, harvest, pulping, fermentation, washing, drying and roasting. Depending on the season, you can join in some of these tasks. Then comes the guided tasting, where you learn to tell aroma, acidity and body apart. After lunch, free time at the farm and the drive back to Cusco, arriving between 18:30 and 19:00.

Who it suits
Coffee lovers, travellers who already know the classic circuit and want to see another side of Cusco, and photographers: the change of scenery from mountains to jungle is spectacular. There are no demanding walks. The highest point is the Abra Málaga pass, by vehicle; spend a couple of days in Cusco first. More in the acclimatisation guide.
